Nestled within the leafy confines of Shahibaug, the quaint Kasturbhai Lalbhai Museum complex houses a vast collection of Indian art—spanning centuries—within two buildings, both restored by architect Rahul Mehrotra. The main building, a colonial house built in 1905, showcases over a thousand years of art. The display includes a varied range of paintings, sculptures, postcards and a few personal favourites from the Lalbhai family’s collection. While the adjacent building—the Claude Batley house—was built in the 1930s and focuses on a more contemporary vibe. It houses temporary exhibitions, retrospectives and works by emerging artists.

I documented the museum for the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, in early 2017. It should be on your list in case you happen to visit Ahmedabad. Even the restored colonial bungalows are a sight to behold.
